How Tevis Energy Came To Be

Dorothy Tevis graduated from Western Maryland College in 1935 with a degree in home economics. She later pursued some graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin.

From 1937 to 1942, she taught in Baltimore City. It was during this time that she met and married Stanley H. Tevis, Jr. She loved to practice the skills she cultivated during her undergraduate studies, and her favorite among them was probably cooking.

Dorothy was extremely innovative around the home and, as her son, Jack fondly noted, could make something out of anything.

He also recalls the embroidered sign that hung in his childhood home, a quote which Dorothy fully embodied. The sign read: “Even my failures are edible.

When Jack’s father died abruptly in 1974, Dorothy was given the opportunity to sell the family heating oil business. She sent Jack, who was college age, to the bank to ask for advice. The branch manager said that the best advice he could give was to sell the company and walk away.

When Jack told Dorothy what the manager had said, she refused and insisted that the company be held for Jack. Dorothy sat as chairwoman of the board until Jack was ready to take reins of the company. It was almost unheard of for a woman to hold a position like that in a local business at the time, let alone in the fuel industry.

Dorothy had the courage to keep the business and take on the challenge of managing what was once one office and 13 employees. Jack pointed out that Dorothy’s unique combination of graciousness and inner fortitude was what made her so special and beloved by all who knew her.
